Is it time for a new ghd hair straightener model?

by admin on August 25, 2010

It seems like only yesterday that the ghd IV styler – the next generation of ghd hair straighteners was launched, but in fact it was October 2006 when the first IV ghd straighteners hit the shelves (as part of that year’s Christmas Gift Set).

That means that the ghd IV styler is now fast approaching its fourth birthday, and as such it is only natural that our thoughts are turning to what is going to replace it.   Although they have still yet to really capture any serious market share, the launch of the Cloud Nine Hair straighteners by the original team behind the ghd straightener cannot have gone unnoticed down at ghd towers.

The main difference between the ghd hair straightener and the Cloud 9 hair straightener is that the latter has variable heat settings, allowing for different amounts of heat to be used depending on the type of style you are trying to create.

Although we used to be sceptical of the need for variable heat ghd hair straighteners, we have spoken to numerous hairdressers who claim that they see a real benefit of this technology, for example, in creating straight hair that isn’t quite so “poker straight” (which their clients can use to  help re-create the popular salon-style blow dry finish at home).

Also as market leaders, adding a variable heat ghd V styler to the range (perhaps at the £119 price point that now seems to have been permanently vacated by the ghd IV styler) would be a classic defensive move, and would remove any “competitive advantage” that Cloud 9 hair straighteners have over ghd hair straighteners.

It would also provide a real incentive for all the millions of customers who already have a set of ghd straighteners to upgrade to a new ghd model – although the regular limited edition versions of the IV styler continue to prove to be extremely popular, there is no doubting the fact that they do not appear to be delivering the same level of sales uplift as they used to.

Of course, a flip-side to all this speculation about a new ghd V styler for 2011 is the old maxim: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.   There is no question that the ghd IV styler is a fantastic, proven styling tool that millions of consumers all around the world absolutely love.

However, times change and people expect that their favourite brands will continue to innovate and release new products, suggesting that new 2011 ghd hair straighteners are a possibility not worth ruling out entirely...

An updated version of the ghd stylers (possible called ghd V) are being released mid october 2010, styles in half the time, new look to the plates, and the outside tip doesn’t get as hot.. and more ;)
