ghd hair straighteners - new adverts show a wicked sense of humour

ghd has finally retired the “urban angel” / religious imagery adverts that have been the mainstay of their TV and press advertising for their range of ghd hair straighteners.

The new adverts by RKCR/ Y&R represent quite a major departure, and one that we welcome - they show the product!  A lot of the previous ghd adverts were very heavy on the film noir cues but reasonably light on ghd hair straighteners or people using them to straighten their hair.

This new advert, although still stunningly shot and featuring a continuation of the smart, sassy, ghd - wielding female lead, actually shows some hair being straightened and also a good close-up of the ghd IV styler itself.

The ethos of these new adverts is summed up in the slogan, “you can do anything with your hair”. This reflects the increased versatility of the ghd IV Styler, that was first introduced as the flagship ghd hair straightener in late 2006, replacing the ghd 3.1b.

The ghd IV Styler has a more rounded barrel and better performance, allowing you to create curls, flicks and waves as well as poker straight hair.  Although this initial advert was smart to focus on hair straightening (as this is far and away the most common reason for buying ghd straighteners), expect future adverts to focus on some of the more adventurous styles that are possible in the comfort of your own bedroom (or boudoir) thanks to the abilities of the ghd IV Styler.

We are super excited about the new ghd Precious Gift Set. With so much doom and gloom about this year, isn’t it great that ghd have decided to treat us to such an opulent and classically designed Limited Edition ghd.

The intricate and deliberately elegant silver and black design on the new Limited Edition ghd hair straightener wouldn’t look out of place amongst the Baroque finery of somewhere like Blenheim Palace.

The new Baroque ghd hair straightener looks absolutely stunning, with a silver overlay tracing out delicate and intricate patterns in the glossy black ghd hair straightener.

Of course it is not just the ghd Precious hair straighteners themselves that are absolutely stunning.

Our first impressions of the ghd Precious roll bag are very good as well.  Aside from the dazzling sparkle of the stone studded exterior and the bold, oversized shiny black bow, we are also delighted to see ghd continuing with a return to featuring hair care accessories within their ghd Limited Editions.

Although ghd can certainly cut it amongst the most fashionable brands in the World, they are fundamentally a hair care brand and as such, the inclusion of a ghd travel dryer and ghd roll bag with detatchable ghd heat proof mat makes this Christmas 2009 gift set a sure fire sales sensation.

RRP is set at £155, which is the same as last year’s ghd Purple, and represents great value considering what is included in the ghd Precious Christmas gift set.

Whether or not we will see much in the way of discounting by our ghd Approved internet retailers waits to be seen.  Although there were deals to be hand with the ghd Purple, we get the feeling that this is a whole level up in terms of desirability and so we expect a cat fight this Christmas as shoppers fall over themselves to get their hands on a Limited Edition Christmas 2009 ghd Precious Gift Set.

One last point is that after a timely launch of the ghd baby pink IV Styler, the expected mid-October launch of the ghd Precious IV Styler gift set means that there should hopefully be none of the stock and an availability problems that affected the launch of the ghd Purple last time around.

ghd at a crossroads?

For almost a decade, ghd has reigned supreme at the pinnacle of the hair industry.  They are both the premium brand and also the de facto standard for hair straighteners.

Like Google, ghd has become so intertwined with straightening hair, that some people talk about “ghd’ing” their hair, meaning to straighten it, just as others talk about “googling something” when they mean to search for it.

However, with the departure of ghd CEO and co-founder, Martin Penny (although it is suggested that he retains a significant shareholding), along with the recent fall out with TWBA/Manchester their advertising agency, perhaps the time has come for ghd to look to renew and reinvigorate themselves for their, hopefully, second decade of hair dominance.

The news that original ghd supplier UNIL has appointed original ghd marketing gurus, Propaganda, to launch a serious competitor must surely be cause for some concern down ghd way?  Although perhaps with the arrival of some competition, so ghd will up their game.

Certainly, their approach of releasing 3 or more limited editions a year seems to have run its course, with recent launches failing to capture the imagination (not withstanding the massive successes of the Purple ghd and the Pure white ghd).  The Benefit Cosmetics tie-up was a clever idea to move the Limited Editions away from just colour changes, but is their really much synergy between make-up and hair care?  Not really if the response to the promotion was anything to go by.

Of course, it is important not to get too negative.  ghd have barely put a foot wrong since they first launched, and it is inevitable that a company moving from an entrepreneur-led hypergrowth company to management-led established player is going to have a few teething troubles.

Unlike other companies who try to complete a similar transistion in other markets, ghd still have the very best product and are still virtually unchallenged by a single serious direct competitor (if you leave aside the Babylisses of the world).  They have a brand that probably ranks in the top for recall amongst their target audience and they are still undeniably “cool”.

Indeed, if ghd are at a crossroads, perhaps the only thing that can be said with certainty is that whatever comes next is sure to blow our socks off!

When is the GHD Purple going to be in stock?

Good question, Mary….

Fact is that it would seem that things have gotten a little delayed at ghd HQ.   No official word yet, but even their own website is still only taking pre-orders despite stating that delivery will be from the 10th of November.

Its only 44 days until Christmas, so we appreciate that there are a few nervous gift-buyers at the moment wondering if the ghd Purple Christmas gift set is going to make an appearance before its time to stick the turkey in the oven?

Well we don’t want to panic you, but the folks over at Amazon are claiming a delivery date of November 25, exactly one month before the big day.  Now, they tend to be pretty on the ball when it comes to these things, although some of the smaller retailers can normally get products up and selling a bit quicker (less warehouses to coordinate…)

Best bet is to stick our purple ghd price comparison into your favourites and check back every day (nay, make that several times a day) like the crazed ghd-addict that we know you are.  We’ll be updating the stock statuses of all our ghd approved merchants as soon as we hear anything!

Of course all of them are offering pre-orders, which given the level of hype surrounding this limited edition release, might be a good idea lest you end up missing out in what will certainly be a purple ghd buying frenzy.

I’m dreaming of a Purple GHD Christmas (!?)

Okay, so the headline would have read better if it was the white ghd that was being launched now (rather than back in May) but alas the world of high fashion does not indulge clichéd bloggers and so I must make do with shoehorning the latest ghd colour into the oh-so-predictable seasonal headline (Oi! It’s still Autumn, Ed).

ghd, being decidedly less clichéd than your humble scribe, have decided that instead of a Bing Crosby-style White Christmas, this festive season it is all going to be about the lush purple ghd with funky paisley pattern design (not as snappy a song name, but a pretty amazing looking ghd judging by the first pictures circulating the internet).
