The summer solstice threw up the usual topic of conversation here at CompareGHD headquarters: "Wow! Isn't it amazing how quickly 2008 has passed, I can't belive it is already......blah, blah, blah".

Anyway, leading on from that, the conversation soon shifted to what the passing of the year meant in terms of all things GHD and that was when it struck us....  Based on previous years, it is (by our calculations) only 85 days until the 2008 edition of the GHD Pink hair straightener is available to buy in the UK!

For those of you new to the world of GHD, the annual launch of the Pink GHD is probably the most hotly anticipated event in the haircare world.   GHD released their first pink hair strightener in the UK in 2004 and it was an instant hit. Moreover, it was a force for good, as every pink straightener sold meant a donation was made to Breakthrough Breast Cancer as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Since then, sales of pink GHD hair straighteners have contributed an incredible £1.1 million to the fight against breast cancer.

However, it is not just in the UK that the pink GHD styler is making a difference. In the United States the GHD Pink supports Young Survival Coalition (YSC) with the “Power of Pink” campaign and elsewhere around the globe, sales of pink ghds raise funds and help boost awareness for a range of cancer charities.

At the time of writing there is no official word on what the UK-version Pink GHD is going to look like this year, but the chances are it will be very similar to the model from the last two years (see below).  This appears to be borne out by the imagery currently on the USA version of the official ghd website - where the USA-version is available for pre-ordering.

Don't fret through, as soon as more information is available, we'll post it right here and will launch our Pink GHD Approved Price Comparision in good time for the official launch so that you can be sure to grab a bargain on a pair of pink ghds before they sell out.

Until then here is a brief timeline of the pink ghd:

2004 - A legend is born....

The very first limited edition pink ghd hair straightener was released in October 2004. Available in cute "baby pink" it was launched in support of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, with a £10 donation from each pink styler sold going to the charity.

Pink ghds quickly became the essential accessory of the year as women across the UK clammered to get their hands on a set. However, numbers were strictly limited and demand soon outstripped supply, which meant that many ghd fans were unable to snap up a pink ghd.

2005 - The return of a sensation...

With an enormous sigh of relief from all those who missed out in 2004, in October 2005 ghd released a new limited edition baby pink iron - this time with a matching pink bottle of ghd iron oil (the oil, it has to be said, was not pink, just the bottle!)

After the runaway success of the previous model, the pink ghd was well on its way to becoming a legend in the world of hairdressing, which meant that many retailers sold out of pink ghds in just two weeks!

In the marketing campaign that accompanied the launch of the 2005 pink ghd,  ghd re-created the international pink ribbon symbol for breast cancer awareness by twisting a pair of pink ghds into the same iconic shape. This placed their goal of raising as much money as possible for the fight against breast cancer at the heart of the pink ghd promotion.

2006 - The future of hair straightening...

In October 2006 ghd shocked and delighted their devotees by changing the colour of the pink styler from baby pink to 'hot pink'! Not only that, but the 2006 limited edition pink ghd was the first ghd IV (Mk4) model ever to be released.

The ghd IV styler had a number of improvements on the previous model (mk3.1b) not to mention a sleek and streamlined new look! This time, the pink iron oil was replaced with a fabulous travel pouch which doubled as a heat mat. Again, £10 from the sale of each iron was donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. In fact pink ghds were now so popular that ghd had become one of the charity's biggest benefactors.

 2007 - Evolution not revolution....

In 2007 ghd released their limited edition pink ghd IV styler a little earlier than normal, in early September. Sticking with the hot pink colour, but in a slightly different shade, ghd really excelled themselves with the bonus items. The 2007 model came with a pink pouch and heat mat, pink sectioning clips and an instructional DVD. However, the RRP also increased in 2007 to £135, compared to £125 in 2007, with £10 from the sale of each pair being donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
