Fake ghd - the easy way to waste £61!

Or £40.50, or £46.00, or £57.99, or £56.55, or £78.50, etc…

For much of 2009, the key search pages on Google for ghd (i.e. those returned when you search for ghd, ghd hair straighteners, ghd straighteners, ghd styler, etc) have included a number of ever changing scam websites that claim to sell genuine ghd hair straighteners (and often claim to be Official Retailers) but instead sell counterfeit ghd hair straighteners.

If you’ve arrived at this article, chances are you are worried about fake ghds and want some information on how to identify if a particular website is selling genuine or fake ghd hair straighteners.

Firstly, don’t worry you are not alone in being unsure about which websites to trust when it comes to buying ghd stylers and other hair products.  You can see from the extensive comments below that many other consumers have run into difficulties when shopping for ghd hair straighteners and sadly, some have ended up buying fake ghds that are not warrantied and, indeed, may actually be danagerous.

If you think you have bought a ghd product that is not genuine then the best approach is to call ghd on 0845 330 1133 or use the online product checker here .

Alternatively, if you are wondering if a particular website is legitimate, then the following steps should help you:

1. Is the ghd retailer’s site based in the UK?

Does the site have a clearly visable UK postal address?

2. Does the site selling ghds have a UK landline telephone number?

That could include 0800 or 0845 but not numbers starting with 07 or any number with an international dialing code.

3. Is the ghd website VAT registered?

Check the terms and conditions - you should find a VAT number and also a Registered Company number.  Sites that are legitimate don’t need to hide these and will always have them on display (indeed, displaying such information along with postal address is a legal requirement).

4. Will your ghds be delivered from within the UK?

Check the small print or any delivery details page. Your ghds should be dispatched from within the UK using a domestic delivery service that takes no more than 2 or 3 days.

5. Can you use a payment method other than Paypal?

This is an important tip.  If the site only allows you to pay using Paypal and doesn’t have its own credit card processing  then it is almost certainly a scam site.  Unfortunately it is very easy to accept payments using Paypal without having to undergo the same level of stringent checks that a company must pass in order to accept credit cards directly via their own merchant account.   A site that has its own credit card processing will not require you to login or pay via Paypal-branded pages.

6. Does the site offer “Tax Free” or “No Sales Tax” or “Non-Tax”

If so, then it is a scam -100%.  You live in the UK and the only websites you can buy genuine ghd products from are in the UK also.  Thus you can’t buy “tax free” - it is not legal to sell products free of “sales tax” (i.e VAT).  Can you buy a Sony Bravia tax free in the UK? No  Can you buy a Nintendo Wii tax free in the UK, No?

So can you buy the most popular hair straightener tax free?

7. Does the site sell other hair care products besides ghd?

Almost every genuine ghd website sells many other products alongside ghd hair straighteners (there are a few exceptions but these will not fail on the other points in this article).  You can normally expect to find Tigi, Kerastase, Paul Mitchell and other such Salon brands. You shouldn’t expect to find “ugg boots” or any other highly expensive and commonly counterfeited product.

8.  Does the site “feel” right?

To help you understand what we mean, we’ll take the scam site “www.ghd-hair-straighteners.net” as an example.

Look at the Privacy policy and the first line reads “Thank you for visit Official Ghd Online Retailer website and reviewing our privacy policy.”  Not only should “visit” be “visiting” but rather than the site name they have used “Official Ghd Online Retailer website” - so that they can cut and paste this same privacy policy into their next scam site.  Also nowhere in the privacy policy is there an address to which you can write to obtain a copy of your details (a legal right under the Data Protection Act).

Their shipping page uses a completely different text colour to the rest of site and again is written by someone with very poor English “Please contact us within 24 hours after delivered.”

Also, from their delivery details:

“Most approved orders leave our warehouse within one business day. The time it takes to receive your package varies depending on the shipping method you choose, but our standard is 8-days, meaning you will receive your package within 1week usually”

8 days?  For UK delivery by DHL, Fedex or UPS (as they claim later)?  Even if they were using one of the cheapest services from DHL, the slowest you’d expect to get your order would be 2 days following dispatch. 8 days pretty much guarantees you that the delivery is originating overseas - and is thus fake.

Now each scam site will have slightly different black marks that make identifying it reasonably obvious, but they will always be there.

9. Are they selling the “ghd gold” hair straightener with cluch bag?

This hasn’t been available for years from ghd, but was remarkably popular with counterfeiters who much still have relatively large stocks remaining. No legitimate website has this product listed.

10. IS THE PRICE TOO CHEAP?

This is really what it boils down to.  Is the price just too cheap?  We make it our job to source the cheapest ghds around to display on our website and we’ve NEVER seen genuine ghd IV styler’s priced at less than £87.99 (and even that was only for a few days, athough do note that the ghd mini IV styler can be as low as £80 as it has a £10 RRP).  There is very little margin to play with when selling ghd hair straighteners and as such prices of £61, or £59 or whatever are JUST NOT POSSIBLE!

No matter how desperate you are to grab a big discount, you need to understand that ghd’s are not even sold to retailers for £61, so there is 0% chance that a site selling them for around that price (or even £20+ more) is going to be genuine.   You cannot buy anything at less than the wholesale price, so why would you be able to buy the most popular hair straightener in the world for less than wholesale?

Finally if you are still willing to “take a chance” then please bear in mind that by buying a fake set of ghds, you are not only funding organised criminal behaviour, you might be risking the life of you and your family as the product could potentially catch fire even when switched off (but still plugged in to the mains).  A fake product will not have passed any electrical safety tests, won’t have been CE tested and will have been put together with the cheapest components available.

So remember, there are plenty of fake ghd products out there, and the only way to ensure that you are buying a genuine ghd product that is properly tested and manufacturered to the appropriate standards is to buy from a ghd approved retailer.

With your peace of mind our priority, here at Compareghd.com we only list ghd approved retailers in our price comparison tables, ensuring that you get the cheapest price for genuine ghd products!

Thanks for the warning!! Horrible fake ghd people.

    Hannah.

Just bought GHD Dark, now starting to worry that they are fake!

  3. Amanda says:

Hi, Just wanted to say a big thankyou for your warning and how to spot the fakes, I was very nearly suckered into buying “cheap ghds” from a website with poor english and no address etc. Just put my order in to a site recommended by this you. Have also found that if you go to ghdhair.com they have a website checker that you can enter a web address into and they will tell you if this is an official ghd website.

  4. Katherine says:

    http://girlznight.co.uk

I found your website about month ago and after researching the recommended sites on here, brought the pretty in pink set from girlznight. That was three weeks ago and no straighteners have arrived. I have asked the company where they are and got a one sentence reply that they are on their way. That was over a week ago. I am now stuck not knowing what to do as I can’t afford to write them off as ‘lost in the post’. Am not happy that this is a site that you have recommended,so I thought would be reliable, yet they have not delievered… (although they were very quick to take my money)

    • Liz says:

Hi Katherine, could you tell me if your order from Girlznight.co.uk ever arrived? Are they a bogus company and a fraud?

I also ordered and purchased online a GHD 3 weeks ago from this “recommended as bona fide” site. It’s supposed to be a special; Christmas gift. Nothing has arrived and I have sent 4 emails to them to date without a single reply. I think this company should definitely be taken off the recommended list if not for outright fraud then for woeful incompetence with delivery and communication with customers. I am very upset that my daughter will be without her Christmas present. If anyone else has had any dealings with this Girlznight company, supposedly based in Glasgow, could they post some info on them and let customers know what’s going on with them? Thanks

      Liz

    • Nicoli says:

I ordered a GHD for my wife as a present, from Girlznight as well December 22, 2009. Charge went through no GHD to be seen, several e-mails have been sent no response.

I agree they need to be removed from this site. I ordered from them because of this site.

My poor boyfriend didnt realise quite how shady companies can be and bought me a gift set from this site. Claim £75 but took £85. the box arrived from China and is terrible with all the words mispelled on the back. open up the GHDs and they have a fake hologram on the straightner but nothing on the cable.

Not only did we get ripped off for the fake straightners they have taken more money than stated on bill, double whammy scam.

So raging that these companies are getting away with this!! At this time with serious credit crunch every penny is a prisoner and for that one little luxury i was going to get for my birthday, for the GHDs i have been dreaming about for years and never been able to afford and now this happens. this information should be more readily available for consumers and these criminals should be dealt with!!

    • Lisa says:

Same happened to me, bought purple set of GHD for my daughter, cost £75.00 but they took £82.00, received the straighteners they look genuine but have checked them with GHD and they are definatley fake, i’m not covered with paypal as it wasnt an ebay purchase and im concerned that if i send them back then ill have just given away £82!!, any body got any suggestions, sites like this should be at the top of the google page so you dont miss them

      • admin says:

Yes, that would be nice. However, these scammers also use very dodgy web scams to get high rankings on Google. It would be lovely if Google could do something about this…

        • Helen says:

If you have paid with debit or credit card then go to your bank. Visa debit cards are covered by non receipt of goods so if you have not received them then your bank should be able to get your money back. If you have recived fakes then credit cards should get you a refund - for debit cards you will have to be persistant but bank should help.

  6. suzie says:

as above but site was http://www.likeyourhair.net, which now actually tells you it is a fake site, only its a week too late for me

    • Hannah Clark says:

Purchased straightners from a fake site a week ago, and just went on the site and noticed the scam page. Am so upset, because they are so expensive. Actually feel sick! Google shouldnt allow them to be at the top of the page if they’re not a genuine site.

      Terribly terribly upset.

      • jennifer says:

I bought the purple set for my mum for xmas over a week ago now and havent heard anything from them at all. I have emailed and got nothing back i then decided to put it into google for a review and i am now here on this site and feel like crying. I cant believe ive been so stupid to fall for this!!! i have bought these with my credit card and i am hoping i can call them and claim it back but i dont think.

  7. Laura says:

    http://www.ukghdscheap-shop.com/

offt brilliant! When my ghd’s broke just as I started university I thought it was amazing to get new ones for £61 from the above website…not anymore!! My hair as been like a birds nest for the past week while i’ve waited on my ‘ghds’. The website seemed genuine, I paid through paypal and they are being delivered via parcel force and I have been given a tracking number etc. on the down side after reading this website they dont seem as geunine…there coming from China, I’ve waited more than a week for delivery and they also sell the gold ghd’s! ohh nooo!! Following advice from the website when they arrive I will firstly attempt to register them with ghd, fingers crossed!! I’ll keep you posted and if anyone else has heard of the above website let me know!

    • Ade says:

I ordered some off that site Laura just over a week ago for my daughter, not arrived yet but I’m pretty sure I’ve been conned after reading this site. Did yours ever arrive?

  8. mc says:

oh dear… bought some ghd’s from uk-ghds.com tried to register them online with no success they have the hologram and everything i was wary when got them cos they just dont do the job as well as my last ghd’s think Ive been scammed going to call ghd on Monday… is there anything i can do about this?

  9. Sarah says:

I bought a pair of GHD Rare straighteners from Ebay last week for £69.99 which is rather cheap. I had a funny feeling about them and when they arrived yesterday I immediately tried to register them on the official GHD website but soon found out that they are fake even though they look incredibly genuine as they have the hologram and everything - I have old official GHD straighteners therefore I have something to compare them to. I’m going to contact the seller first thing tomorrow and see if I can hopefully get a full refund. I’m so disappointing and can’t believe I’ve been coned. I wouldn’t recommend buying GHD straighteners from Ebay unless you feel 100% confident in the seller/what you see.

    • admin says:

If the seller is based in the UK, make sure you report them to your local Trading Standards, as if it turns out that they are selling counterfeit goods then they are breaking the law!

Also, if you buy via eBay then you should be able to claim your money back via Paypal (as you get enhanced Buyer Protection from Paypal when buying on eBay as opposed to other websites)

  10. Maria says:

Omfg… I think i just bought fake ghd:(

  11. julia says:

I bought ghd’s from a company called ghdfactorysale, this was a month ago, they still haven,t arrived I’ve emailed them many times, and they send back badly spelled letters asking me to be patient and wishing me a nice day.another web site address for them is ghdfactorysaleservice@gmail.com. can anyone tell me how to get money back.

  12. jonathan says:

i just ordered some ghds for my gf birthday just seen this site as i was bit wary can some one let me know if its a fake im 90 percent sure it is now how do i go bout getting my money back or have i totally lost out

  13. jonathan says:

http://www.ghds-direct.com i think is a fake even can some one let me know please

  14. Tom says:

iv just got my girlfriend some of this website to im not sure if there fake just have to wait and see if they arrive. waste of money i think but really dont think you would be able to get your money back.

  15. Tom says:

iv just bought my girlfriend some of here aswell not sure if there real but i dont understand how they would be able to sell fakes?
who says there not pinched and they sell them off or there from a catolouge that have them spare.
will have to wait and see till they arrive.
    hopefully they arent fake.

  16. Vee says:

I recieved my ghd pretty in pink limited edition yesterday. Ordered it from ghd-direct.com (UK) and arrived in good condition after 7 days here in Asia. :) They also thrown in some freebees, like heatmat and protector spray and registering it to ghd website was a breeze. So, im a happy camper.. for now, i guess. “)

  17. Mags says:

Hi pretty sure this is a fake site i was going to buy 3 pairs as the prices were so good. Does anyone know
    Thanks

  18. Mags says:

Sorry i put website in wrong place. http://www.ghds-uks.com/

  19. Jackie says:

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have recently bought some straighteners from http://www.ghdlondonshop.com, which I now believe to be fake. The number is not recognised on the genuine GHD website and the website was not recognised either. I have emailed the seller several times to provide an address to return them to. I have also tried to pursue this with my bank, although as I bought them on a debit card (which I have since cancelled) am not hopeful of a positive resolution! Does anyone know the trading address of this seller so that I can return this product, as it is no use to me and will otherwise end up at our local tip! I had no idea that these websites existed and am horrified that they can get away with it - you live and learn! Many thanks.

  20. beagle says:

Heres an easy way to tell if its fake: If the price is more than 10-20$ cheaper than the official GHD website, theres about a 90% chance that its counterfeit. Like if you see what is normaly 220$ US, and you go on a site that shows it for 70$, would you buy it? No. Thats just stupid. Same if its normally 120 in UK, and you see it for 60, its ovbiously fake, so stop wasting your money.

    • admin says:

If only it were that easy beagle. For starters a lot of people don’t know the price, and only ever check fake websites (which they don’t know to be fake). Whilst price is certainly a major indicator, we’ve seen some faker selling at “full price” to try and get round this also…

  21. Sarah says:

http://www.ghdoutlet_uk.com Purchased “Dark”, arrived in box (which appears genuine), complete with booklet, cd, case, all appears OK. But after reading above comments, I am not so sure. Any ideas on the website anyone?

    • admin says:

I’m sorry, but (although I can’t be certain) I don’t know of a single genuine ghd retailer that has been selling dark ghd hair straighteners for months and months. The last available (discounted) retail price was around £129.99.

The website was down when I checked, but it is coming up as “Caution! Unknown retailer website.” on the official ghd website checker.

Basically, all signs are suggestive that you have been scammed. I’d personally call ghd on 0844 879 4905 ASAP and then call your bank….

      • Rebecca says:

I also think this website is a scam. I look at a photo of the GHD gold edition and if you look carefully in the photo you can see someones digital camera in the top right hand corner of the photo! It all rings alarm bells to me so I would not go there.

  22. carol says:

Hi can anyone tell me if ghds are fakes from London Boutique have contact number and reg number but still not sure can any one help thanks

    • April says:

yeah they are. brought some around a month ago, they took £80 out on the same day and i still have no GHD’s. the website has now been shut down and luckily im convered for fraud. they won’t email you back and the telephone number just rings out. i wouldn’t hold your breath, sorry.

  23. dawn says:

oh my god, i have just bought £400 worth of ghds from http://www.ghdfactoryoutlet store. i have emailed them, and i have had poorly written letters back to me, on my bank statement its shows perfect-boots.com and brandflatirons on another of the transactions! they havent arrived as yet and i cant get intouch with anyone. how do you get a refund?

    • admin says:

If you spent over £100 in a single transaction you are covered by your credit card company, and likely covered by your bank if it was a debit card you used. Make sure you report this as a fraud to the policy and get a case number (this can help focus your bank’s mind a little). State that the website used ghd trademarks to describe the product, and provided imagery of genuine ghd hair straighteners (i.e. there was no knowledge on your part when the transaction took place that the goods were replicas or fakes)

  24. dawn says:

these are the types of reply i am getting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Helen says:

If you paid with debit or credit card & have not received the goods then you are coverd by Visa - non receipt of goods- go to your bank who can get a refund for you. If you have received them & they are fake then credit cards should pay out, as for debit cards then be persistant as they are not as described & not fit for purpose.

  26. Liz says:

I have just purchased a pair of limited edition Pretty in Pink GHD straightners from http://www.ghdhairshop.org.uk at a cost of £87.99. They arrived in a nice box with all the tags, labels, hologram and yes you guessed it, 100% genuine fake, I am gutted. Visa unable to help as the website didn’t state anywhere that they were genuine GHD and they are less than a £100, also can’t return because all in chinese and no return address details. I feel such a fool. There should be a law to prevent this, if the money can be taken by such a company then it should be able to be taken backby my bank who paid it in the first place. Not sure what else I can do now? I am tempted to use the straightners but at what price?????

    • admin says:

Don’t use them what ever you do! These things aren’t worth £5, nevermind £87.99. Untested and unsafe electrical goods can cause fatal house fires, not to mention seriously damage your hair! Call your bank again and insist on doing a chargeback, don’t fall for any of this “they didn’t state they were genuine” baloney. Get a police case number (state that you were the victim of fraudulent misrepresentation) and call your card issuer with this and demand to do a chargeback. Keep at them, and eventually if you are lucky you might get your money back.

There are laws to stop this, unfortunately the major search engines chose to be totall reactive rather than proactive. They could stop this entire fraud in less than a couple of hours, but for some reason it doesn’t seem a priority…

      • Liz says:

Thx for you help, my concern is that the website I bought from appears to be in China, do the same regulations apply

        • admin says:

Obviously because they are based in China, you have no chance of pursuing the scammers directly, but you were under the impression that you were buying from a legitimate ghd retailer in the UK (given that they had a “org.uk” domain name).

Sadly, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be successful with your bank / card issuer, but sometimes these sorts of organisations aren’t always overly helpful to start with (it puts a lot of people off) - however, they have ways of recovering the money, you just have to be insistant that you are a victim of fraud, and you wish to do a chargeback. Don’t come off the phone until they agree, and hopefully you’ll be successful. Stick to the facts, you have been defrauded by a illegal website pretending to be based in the UK that was pretending to sell genuine goods (fact: a website doesn’t have to use the term “genuine” or “authentic” for you to be justified in believing that the goods were genuine. Authentic-looking logos, images, names and descriptions, etc can make it reasonable to assume you were buying genuine goods). You expected to receive genuine goods and were reasonable in that expectation, and this did not happen, thus you are entitled to insist that your card issuer to do a chargeback (as I have said elsewhere, the rules for debit cards are different, and can depend on your bank’s own policies).

    • jeff says:

yep I also bought hair straighteners from that company and they came from China and proved to be fake!

    • jeff says:

I bought a pair and they’re fake. I notice at the top of there web page they say BEWARE OF IMITATIONS. This infers they are genuine. I will be trying hard to get my money back

Unfortunately I have also been scamed into buying fake GHDS. Website was GHDSHOPPING.CO.UK.
When I received them they seemed to be faulty and not heating up properly. They have since broke and I can’t find a return address anywhere. When I type the website into google it comes up unrecognised.
They also charged me more than they stated on the website by around £15. I am so annoyed.

    Hi there

I bought ghds from ghds-direct.com and tried to cancel the order but got a reply from melikeyourhair.net to say couldn’t cancel as order already dispatched. I received them 9 days later. They look completley ligitimate. I haven’t used them as they are a christmas present from my husband. I did turn them on to make sure they worked and they seem to be fine. Now from reading all the queries I’m sure they are probably fake. Can I not use these if they’re fake???

    • admin says:

Check out some of our other replies on this (and our article from the menu at the top), but here is the short version:

Of course they look legit, that is the idea. All genuine ghds will validate on the official website (www.ghdhair.com), fakes won’t.

As for using them: Fake ghds are made by criminals who don’t have to pass any safety standards. They use the cheapest possible components, so although the plastic outer shell might look like the real thing, there is no guarantee the inner electrical components will (indeed they almost certainly will not). Plug something of such uncertain origin into your mains supply and then touch your head with it??? You’d have to be cazy in our view! Sorry.

    • aline says:

I’ve just placed an order in http://www.amazon-ghd.com. How about that one ? Is it a fake retailer ? the paypal service has a chinese phone number ? anyone knows ?

  35. DDJ says:

Does anyone know if http://www.ghdkiss.com are a legit site at all? Also if i have paid via paypal and they are not I should be able to get my money back correct?

    • admin says:

We can never say for sure (for legal reasons), but read our guide and then decide what you think about a site that sells ghd pure for less than £70! Also, try using the website checker on http://www.ghdhair.com, you’ll be disappointed with the outcome!

As for getting your money back from Paypal - good luck! You would probably be better off challenging the transaction with your bank (as they can then do a chargeback against paypal).

  36. Jan says:

I to have just purchased some fake GHDs. Luckily mine were late and i was already susspicious that it was a fake site so i contacted my credit card company who refunded my money. They have now been hounding me by phone and e-mail to cancel the pay-back, i dont think so! I followed a link on an Amazon page and when i contacted Amazon to tell them they were not interested so beware of that as well.
So annoying that these people are taking our hard earned cash

My dad recently purchased a pair of ghds from http://www.my-ghd.com and once received them they were obviously fake! Has anyone ever received a full refund from this site?

    • Helen says:

Go to your bank or credit card company who can get you a refund as goods not fit for purpose. Tell them you want to raise a dispute - They will advise you of what to.

I bought some ghds from the carboot for £50 and they are as real as they come. iv registered them with ghd and the carboot i use is constantly checked by trading standards. it just goes to show you can get them cheap. You just have to be careful! borrow a friends pair to take with you and compare them!

Has anyone bought from favouriteghd.com? I bought some purple GHD’s yesterday for £70 and have had email’s saying been despatched and got tracking number but tracking site is for a company in China so am very concerned. Unsure of what to do as my mum has paid for the GHD’s for me and will go mad if they are fake. Help please!

    • Nik says:

I have same thing tracking site don’t work & is Chinese? I guess I’ve been robbed

      • Jemma says:

The tracking site is working for me now but I tried emailing them and the emails i’m getting back are really poor quality, they won’t give me a return address and they won’t let me have my money back. Haven’t even recieved the GHD’s yet so I think we’ve been robbed =(

Been looking for some ghd’s as I brought some at the vitality show last year, they started to not work properly and sent them to GHD - who have very kindly told me this week that they are fake !
    So… found a site called specialghd.com.
Has anyone used them? know anything about them?
they have a load on there at VERY good prices - but I don’t want fake ones again
    any help appreciated - thanks

    • Jemma says:

If I was you, I would either buy from the official ghd site or go round local hairdresses and see what deals you can get them for.
I bought some GHD’s from favouriteghd.com on monday and I am still waiting for them, after reading the tips on here, I have realised I am more than likely going to get fake GHD’s and that is if they even get delievered. The unfortunate thing for me is, my mum has paid for them and I will have to somehow explain to her they are fake.
If you do want to get them from online, check the website in the official GHD site web checker. If it comes up, unknown website, be careful..don’t use it. Only use it if it is verified as real by the checker. Don’t want you making the mistake that i’ve made.

I recently had to replace my ghds after ten years of good service and wasn’t sure where to get them from. After looking around on the internet and checking out all the websites that offered cheaper versions and then looking at forums, all saying don’t buy cheap ones as they are likely to be fake! I ended up getting mine from http://www.ghds.co.uk and they arrived the next day, perfect condition and I could breathe a sigh of relief. Def not worth going to the cheaper websites!!

  49. charlotte says:
